Welcome to the official website

of the Calmadow Trust

Cal Madow (also Al Madow, Al Medu, Calmadow or Al Mado) is a mountain range in north-eastern Somalia, extending from several kilometers west of Bosaso in Puntland to north-west of Erigavo in Somaliland. It's name means "Black Heights", like Black Forest.

Its peak sits at almost 2,500 m in Shimbiris, north-west of Erigavo. Cal Madow became a tourist destination in the late 1980s.

It was and is mainly the local Sanaag region's population of the Warsangeli People that preserved and maintains its habitat despite facing future risks of deforestation.

Calmadow Trust is a non-governmental association working in Somalia for nature protection, wildlife conservation, permaculture, education, development projects and research. We are a humanitarian, non-profit organization.

This website is in development and maintained by volunteers. More information will be available over the coming times.

friends of Peoples close to Nature - fPcN-interCultural

The Forum 'friends of Peoples close to Nature' - fPcN-interCultural -is the global movement of groups and individuals concerned with the survival of Indigenous Peoples and their cultures - in particular natural hunters and fisher-folk as well as genuine gatherers of wild fruit and other plant products for food, medicine and livelihood. These were the first and are the ultimate societies on Earth to have a non-exploitative, sustainable relationship with the natural world, that is today threatened by the destruction of ecosystems caused by unwise use and technologies of the taker societies leading to mass-extinction.

fPcN's work is to stand - upon request - together with these ethnicities in order to protect their unique aboriginal cultures from enforced assimilation, alien religions, the false ideologies of 'progress' and 'growth' and as well from confinement inside colonial or post-colonial state constructs, the fatal absorption of their First Nations into the global economy, to shield them from entanglement in global politics or invasion by mass migration, from warfare as well as from modern disease vectors in order to secure their own ways of maintaining their genuinely human and humane values in their own timing and as they wish. fPcN subscribes to the philosophy expressed in this statement by Australian Aboriginal Elder Lilla Watson: "If you've come here to help me, you're wasting your time. But if you've come because your liberation is bound up with mine, then let us work together." PRI - The Permaculture Research Institute

Permaculture

Calmadow Trust is working in partnership with the Permaculture Research Institute to restore a large watershed (valley) in the Calmadow region. When finished, the entire area will be transformed from desert to forest. Wildlife will return and the local community will have clean drinking water year-round, as well as abundant food.

About Permaculture

Permaculture is about observing how natural systems work and then applying the same principles to your farm or garden, or to any other aspect of life). A permaculture design has no waste and no expensive inputs, ensuring a long-term sustainable system that will over time provide abundant living with little work.

The Permaculture Research Institute of Australia is famous for its work in Dryland permaculture, with many ongoing and successful projects around the world. (See PRI link in sidebar on the right.)

Calmadow Permaculture Project

This project is at a very early stage, more news will be posted as we make progress.
